Keep more of what you earn.
Education-only lessons for doctors on saving, everyday spending habits and running a leaner practice. Pure education, with no investment advice and no product recommendations.
Why money habits deserve a doctor's attention
Medical training teaches almost everything except how to manage the income that follows it.
Income rises late and fast
After years of training, spending tends to jump the moment income does. Without a plan, savings rarely keep pace.
Time is always short
Long shifts leave little room for budgeting. Simple systems that run in the background matter more than willpower.
A practice has hidden leaks
Unused subscriptions, expired stock and idle equipment quietly add up. Small fixes repeated monthly make a real difference.
The curriculum
Four modules, best taken in order. Each one builds a habit you can start the same week.
-
Saving foundations
How saving works as a system rather than whatever is left over at month-end.
- The pay-yourself-first principle
- Building an emergency buffer
- Separating spending and saving accounts
- Setting goals you can measure
-
Everyday habits that add up
The small, repeated choices that decide where your money goes.
- Tracking spending in ten minutes a week
- Spotting and slowing lifestyle creep
- Auditing subscriptions and memberships
- A simple rule for big purchases
-
Running a leaner practice
Practical ways to reduce the operating costs of a clinic without cutting patient care.
- Mapping your fixed and variable costs
- Ordering consumables by usage, not habit
- Energy, maintenance and equipment upkeep
- Reviewing vendor contracts every year
-
Planning for large expenses
Preparing for the costs you can see coming, so they never arrive as a shock.
- Sinking funds for equipment and upgrades
- Budgeting for further education
- Planning around family milestones
- Reviewing your plan every quarter
Quick lessons
Short, practical ideas you can read between patients.
Pay yourself first
Move a fixed amount into savings on the day income arrives, before any spending happens. What remains is your spending budget.
Automating the transfer removes the monthly decision entirely, which is what makes the habit stick.
What an emergency buffer is for
An emergency buffer is money set aside only for the unexpected: a medical leave, a broken machine, a sudden family expense.
Many people aim to cover a few months of essential expenses. Keeping it separate from everyday accounts stops it from quietly being spent.
Lifestyle creep, explained
Lifestyle creep is when spending rises every time income does, so savings never grow. It usually happens through many small upgrades rather than one big one.
One simple approach: when your income increases, decide in advance what share of the increase goes to savings.
The monthly subscription audit
Once a month, list every recurring charge on your statements: apps, software, memberships, journals and services.
For each one, ask whether you used it in the last 30 days. Cancel or downgrade what you did not.
Cutting waste in clinic consumables
Order based on actual usage over the past few months, not on what was ordered last time. Track expiry dates so older stock is used first.
A short monthly stock check often reveals items that are over-ordered or rarely used.
The 48-hour rule for big purchases
For any non-essential purchase above an amount you choose, wait 48 hours before buying.
The pause separates impulse from genuine need. Many purchases simply stop feeling necessary.
